Match Preview: Round 13 v Kangaroos

All the key points ahead of Sunday's clash in Tasmania.

    When and Where:

    Sunday, June 11 at 3:20pm
    Blundstone Arena | Palawa Country

What it Means for the GIANTS:

“All in all, I was pretty happy with the game. Just not the result,” is what Adam Kingsley said post-match following the GIANTS’ heartbreaking loss to Richmond at GIANTS Stadium last weekend. The GIANTS couldn’t capitalise on a late Kieren Briggs goal but will take confidence from their ability to get back into the game following a disappointing opening quarter.

    Last Time We Met:

The GIANTS recorded a convincing 49-point win over North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium last year. Mark McVeigh's side set up the big win with a five-goal to nothing first term, where five individual goalkickers set the GIANTS on the way to a 15.12 (102) to 7.11 (53) win. In a new role in defence, Harry Himmelberg was immense, registering a career-best 37 disposals, along with 16 marks while Stephen Coniglio continued a run of hot form - tallying 34 disposals and booting three goals.

    Where’s the opposition at?

The Kangaroos fell just short against Essendon last weekend - a game of swinging momentum eventually fell the Bombers' way when substitute Massimo D'Ambrosio snapped the match-winning goal with two minutes left at Marvel Stadium. Brett Ratten’s side will be without Jy Simpkin, Hugh Greenwood and Luke Davies-Uniakeas the second-from-bottom Kangaroos (2-10) attempt to snap a 10-match losing streak in Tasmania this weekend.

    GIANTS Player to Watch:

Kieren Briggs is relishing his opportunity at AFL level. The 23-year-old ruck is averaging 28.7 hit-outs, 6 clearances and 14.7 disposals for the GIANTS so far this season and has kicked four goals from his three appearances in 2023.

    In the Mix:

The GIANTS will lose small forward Brent Daniels to a hamstring strain for this weekend’s trip to Tasmania. While Daniels will miss this week’s clash, defender Nick Haynes is expected to be available for selection after being able to progress through the concussion protocols. Fellow defender Leek Aleer (ankle) and talented young midfielder Conor Stone (back) are expected to return via the VFL this week following time off with their respective injuries, with the GIANTS set to take on the Kangaroos at Arden Street Oval on Sunday afternoon. Cameron Fleeton, Harry Rowston and Wade Derksen all impressed in the GIANTS’ VFL loss to Richmond last weekend and will come into consideration for senior selection.

GIANTS Lift a Level to See Off Roos

North Melbourne made a contest through most of Sunday's clash but couldn't keep up when the GIANTS surged.

Toby Greene has produced some magical touches to fire the GIANTS to a valuable 28-point win over North Melbourne in Hobart.

The skipper stepped up in the third quarter with the game on the line, kicking a brace of goals including a soccer-style volley in the square, off a Stephen Coniglio kick.

Ahead 47-42 at half-time, the GIANTS put on a five-goal-to-two third term before finishing 15.13 (103) to 11.9 (75) winners at Blundstone Arena on Sunday.

After several close losses this season, the result moves the GIANTS to 5-8 for and two wins outside the top eight.

Greene, who had 24 disposals and five clearances, slotted three goals for the second week in a row after almost lifting his side over Richmond last round.

Callum Brown also had three goals, including two late in the first quarter to put a dampener on a positive North Melbourne start.

Jake Riccardi picked up a crucial goal for the GIANTS from a 50-metre penalty in the third quarter after North Melbourne's Ben McKay batted the ball away following a mark.

The Kangaroos, without co-captain Jy Simpkin and experienced midfielder Hugh Greenwood, were right in the contest in the first two quarters.

They've now lost 11 straight but have been more competitive in their four games under caretaker coach Brett Ratten.

Nick Larkey was among their best with a game-high four goals, while George Wardlaw had some more eye-catching moments in just his fourth game.

The tenacious 19-year-old kicked his first career goal, topped the tackle count with nine, and had 22 disposals.

North Melbourne's Tarryn Thomas had some nice involvements in the second quarter, picking up two goals to eat into the GIANTS' lead before finishing with three for the match.

Jack Ziebell topped the possession count with 30.
