The AFL Women’s 2018 season has been over for not even a month but already Women’s Football around the country is back with state competitions getting underway.

Reigning AFLW Players’ MVP Courtney Gum hasn’t stopped since the GIANTS’ season came to a close. The 36-year-old returned to South Adelaide in the Statewide Super Women’s League and has continued where she left off starring in all three games, including the Panthers’ round 10 win over Norwood on Sunday.

Gum racked up 16 disposals, seven marks, five inside 50s and kicked 2.3 in the 30-point-win. The performance saw her finish third in the competition’s goalkicking  with 10 goals. With South Adelaide finishing clear on top of the ladder, they have a weekend off as they wait to see if they’ll play Norwood or North Adelaide in the Grand Final.

Back in Sydney, Renee Tomkins, Melissa Freckelton and Pippa Smyth all starred as AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division competition got underway.

Defender Renee Tomkins was listed as second best on ground as her side, Auburn-Penrith GIANTS, lost to the Newtown Breakaways by 31 points at Mahoney Park. Former GIANT Codie Briggs lined up for Newtown, kicking a goal in their win. 

Melissa Freckelton was outstanding for the Western Wolves in their round one win over Sydney University Bombers. Freckelton was listed as second best on ground in the 36-point-win at Sydney University Oval, while former GIANT Steph Walker was named amongst the best on ground for the Bombers. 

Smyth was crucial in the ruck for Macquarie University Warriors as they opened their 2018 campaign with a resounding 65-point-win over Southern Power. 

GIANTS AFLW captain Amanda Farrugia performed runner duties for the Warriors while a few GIANTS Netballers were spotted on the hill at University Oval, cheering on GIANTS AFLW and Netball Strength and Conditioning coach Simone Freeman who starred for the Warriors, kicking three goals on debut.

The 2018 UNSW Canberra 1st Grade Women’s season gets underway on Saturday, April 21, while a host of GIANTS will have a few weeks rest before the 2018 VFLW season begins on Saturday, May 5.
