The UWS GIANTS continued their impressive NEAFL season with a convincing 80-point win over cross-town rivals Swans reserves on Saturday.

A sluggish first term saw the minor premiers trail early, kicking five straight behinds before registering their first goal at the fourteen-minute mark.

It was a different story after quarter time, with the UWS GIANTS clamping down in defence and dominating possession around the ground.

UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand said it was a positive result given the wayward kicking up forward.

“We kicked 10.11 from set-shots which was quite disappointing,” Hand said

“Our tackling and pressure in defence was outstanding but we let ourselves down a bit with our kicking to be honest.

“I thought our captain Sam Reid was exceptional with his leadership and ability to find the ball.

“Adam Kennedy and Lachie Plowman also both performed well through the midfield and across half-back.

“It was pleasing to see Tom Downie hold his own in the ruck all day against two AFL players in Tom Derickx and Toby Nankervis. He was exceptional.”

The UWS GIANTS lead the disposal count 391-263 and had an extra 40 marks around the ground.

Sam Reid led the possession count with 36 while Jacob Townsend also impressed, accumulating 23 touches along with nine tackles and nine clearances.

Utility Adam Tomlinson presented well all game and finished with 23 touches, nine marks and three goals.

The UWS GIANTS play fourth-placed Sydney Uni at Spotless Stadium this Saturday from 10.05am. The match will be a curtain-raiser ahead of GIANTS v Carlton at 1.45pm.

“It’s going to be a big match against Sydney Uni this week who, like us, want to finish off strongly ahead of finals,” Hand said.

“We haven’t played them yet this season so it will be interesting to see where they’re at.”

UWS GIANTS 16.26 (122) def Swans reserves 6.6 (42).
