The GIANTS have surpassed 20,000 members for the first time with the club’s 2017 membership tally up 31 per cent on last season.

On Monday the GIANTS reached 20,102 members, smashing last year’s record tally of 15,311 with five home games in Sydney still to come.

GIANTS CEO David Matthews said it was a momentous occasion for the club.

“As a club we have continued to write our own history and break record after record as we’ve entered our sixth season in the competition,” he said.

“Today’s milestone is one of the most important in our short time and we wholeheartedly thank all those who have been on the journey with us.

“From those who joined before we even had a name and colours, to those who signed up this season to be part of something special, today we celebrate you all.

“Our members and fans have proven themselves to be some of the most loyal, passionate and committed in the AFL and our continued growth is largely because of you.”

Paula Strother, from Douglas Park in the Macarthur Region of Western Sydney, is one of the 2432 Foundation Members who have held a continuous membership for each of the past seven seasons, before the club was even in the AFL.

Paula and her son Steven have attended every single one of the club’s 122 games in the competition, travelling to all corners of the country to support their team.

“As a family we have always followed Aussie Rules football and moving from Adelaide to Sydney, we decided then that we wanted to be part of our own club in Sydney,” she said.

“To be able to say I was there at its origin is very special to me.

“The first couple of seasons we didn't want to miss our first win. Then it was about being there and cheering the guys on; even if we were losing by big margins, we wanted to be there to support them too.

“Footy gets in your blood, soul and heart and we just love our GIANTS.”

Daniel Hynes from Longueville on the Lower North Shore of Sydney just signed up his young family to a three-game Derby membership after watching the GIANTS’ progress this season.

“I’m a keen AFL supporter and have been involved at a junior level for a while now. I’ve been to Swans games and enjoy supporting the code and just watching footy,” he said.

“We had the chance to attend some GIANTS games through our junior club and I loved the experience on game day.

“It’s a great place to bring the family and has a great feel. Their commitment to the community and the way the club connects to our junior players really resonated with me.

“This year we wanted to expand our support and officially become members.

“Up here we’re starved of a huge amount of good, quality football and that’s what the GIANTS are playing right now so it’s a pleasure to go and watch."

Off the back of three nail-biting wins, the GIANTS are sitting atop the AFL ladder alongside the Adelaide Crows, with a huge home game at Spotless Stadium against Essendon on Saturday evening.
