A best-on-ground performance in the NEAFL has draftee Jack Steele knocking down the door for senior selection.

Steele had 32 touches, 11 marks and kicked a goal in the UWS GIANTS’ 76-point win over Eastlake in Canberra.

The PM CAPITAL GIANTS Academy product is yet to debut since joining the club with pick 24 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand said Steele is among a number of players consistently performing this season.

“It’s a great position to be in when players are fighting for spots so we’re quite lucky to have a healthy list at the moment,” Hand said.

“Steele was great on the weekend with his contested work around stoppages plus his ability to spread quickly when needed.

“He was impressive again and was unlucky not reward himself more on the scoreboard.”

Jake Barrett was prolific through the midfield, accumulating a game-high 34 touches while Rory Lobb (five goals) was the best of the forwards.

Excitement machine Will Hoskin-Elliott continued his impressive return from a shoulder injury, kicking four goals in his second game back.

“Will looked dangerous and has a great capacity to keep running all match while his ability to take overhead marks is also great,” Hand said.

“Lobb was brilliant early and kicked four goals in the first quarter before the weather hit and made things a bit more difficult."

Tim Golds, Paul Ahern, Matt Buntine and Zac Williams also pushed their claim for selection on the back of solid games.

The UWS GIANTS face one of the toughest challenges in the NEAFL this week as they travel north to Darwin to clash with NT Thunder.

NT Thunder are also undefeated and beat the UWS GIANTS by 26 points in the corresponding match last season.

The match, which will be live-streamed on the NEAFL website, will take place at TIO Stadium this Saturday, May 2 at 7.00pm (EST).
