GIANTS midfielder Lachie Whitfield won’t play again this season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Whitfield had a shoulder reconstruction today and will also have an operation on his injured foot before the end of the season.

The 2012 number one draft pick played 11 games this year, averaging 20 possessions. He missed five games earlier this season after injuring his foot.

General Manager Football Graeme Allan said: “Unfortunately Lachie has had an injury interrupted season and it’s in his best interests to have this surgery now so he can be ready to start pre-season training.

“We look forward to Lachie making a full recovery and being available for the start of the 2015 season.”

Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Adam Treloar and forward Jon Patton will undergo fitness tests later this week after missing the Round 17 match against Fremantle with groin injuries.

Midfielder Stephen Coniglio will be sidelined for the next five weeks after having surgery on his thumb, while defenders Stephen Gilham (hand) and Curtly Hampton (shoulder) remain on track to return to the field in the coming weeks.

Vice-captain Heath Shaw (concussion) will be assessed further following the GIANTS bye with a decision expected on his return to football later this month.

In better news for the GIANTS, runner Simon Katich looks set to return to his match day role following four weeks out with a calf injury.
