Hailing from the Western Suburbs of Melbourne, Callan Ward began his career at the Western Bulldogs before joining the GIANTS for their debut season in 2012 where he was named one of the club’s inaugural co-captains. A hard-running and tough inside midfielder, Ward sits in the record books as the GIANTS’ first ever goal kicker as well as the club’s first club champion winner, claiming the 2012 Kevin Sheedy Medal. One of the GIANTS’ most consistent players since the club’s inception, Ward’s leadership and courage has been a key pillar in the growth of the club. Ward captained the GIANTS from 2012-2019 and remains an integral leader of the club. In 2018 Ward was voted the AFL’s Most Courageous Player by his peers. After another solid season in 2023, the 33-year-old signed a one-year deal to remain at the GIANTS for a 13th season in 2024 and his 17th overall. Ward’s grandfather, Bill Gunn, played for South Melbourne from 1952 to 1959 and captained the side in 1955.
