Construction is underway on new playing and education facilities at the home of the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants in Sydney’s Olympic precinct.

Minister for Sport and Multicultural Affairs Kate Lundy was joined by AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou and Giants Coach Kevin Sheedy today to get construction started, turning the first sod on the project which has received $2 million in Australian Government funding.

“The Giants are leaders in engaging with their local community here in Western Sydney and the Gillard Government is pleased to support their great work as the Giants reach out to the many different cultures living in the West,” Senator Lundy said.

“These facilities will strengthen the bonds between the Giants, their fans and the broader community – between elite sport and grassroots participation.”

The $11.6 million project will deliver a new elite training field, building refurbishments and a Multicultural Community Education Centre at the Giants’ home ground.

“The new Multicultural Community Education Centre is the centrepiece of this project, with classrooms, meeting rooms and a 75 person theatrette to provide the indoor learning that goes hand in hand with outdoor activities,” Senator Lundy said.

“Once complete, this project will take advantage of the great power of sport in a multicultural society – to build belonging and self-esteem, participation and social inclusion, new opportunities, and good physical and mental health.

“It is great to be putting the facilities in place that will nurture the great sporting talent of western Sydney and develop Giants stars of the future,” she said.
