GIANTS Senior Assistant Coach Leon Cameron is impressed by how the players have resumed training after the Christmas break.

Most of the work completed before the break was focused on fitness and strength conditioning and with the 2013 AFL season fast approaching, the intensity is certainly ramping up.

Speaking at the first skills session after the break, Cameron said: "We had about 75 minutes of footy and we're really rapt with the way they spent their two weeks off and the condition they've come back in."

Whilst the players all enjoyed the two week break, it wasn't a time for complete rest. Each player was given a specific training schedule to complete and the results are showing on the track.

"I think the fitness guys have done a fantastic job monitoring their 16 day break over the Christmas period. But on top of that the players were fantastic in terms of adhering to it. The professionalism of this club is fantastic." Cameron said.

One player who has completed more pre-seasons than most at the GIANTS is ruckman Jonathan Giles.

"We had a pretty full-on schedule. It wasn't really a break. We pretty much had to train every day so it was pretty solid but it was good to be back home and training in a different place and seeing everyone back home," Giles said.

One group that joined the main training group this week was the 2012 draftees who spent the first couple of days of the year at the AFL Players Association Induction Camp in Melbourne. Leon Cameron fully understands the challenge this group faces as the season approaches.

"It's tough coming back after Christmas for them because it's five or six weeks before they get to see Mum and Dad again but they have fitted in really, really well.

"I think the biggest thing with draftee guys is it's hard sometimes if you come in injured. You don't feel a part of it but we're lucky enough that seven out of our eight kids are on the track."

And that's a good thing because competition for spots in the lead up to the NAB Cup is going to be fierce. The GIANTS take on the Swans and Carlton in the first round of the NAB Cup on Sunday 24th February at Blacktown International Sports Park.
