Forward Matt de Boer has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash with North Melbourne in Hobart with a hamstring injury while co-captain Phil Davis will be assessed after suffering concussion.

Davis was collected by an accidental elbow during the match against the Eagles and has taken it easy in the early part of the week as he recovers from the heavy blow.

“He’s progressing as we would expect a normal concussion to progress,” said Head of Athletic Performance David Joyce.

“We’re really conservative with concussions these days and rightfully so and we’ve just got to tick all those boxes.

“We’re not going to rush someone back but if he’s right to play he’ll play.”

De Boer is expected to miss the next two matches with a hamstring injury suffered in the second quarter of the round eight match.

“Matthew has a low-grade lateral hamstring injury, so on the outside of his leg,” Joyce said.

“We would expect him to be back in around three weeks.”

Midfielder Josh Kelly (groin soreness) won’t face the Kangaroos but looks set to return to the field for the GIANTS’ round 10 clash against the Bombers at Spotless Stadium.

“We’re confident that Josh is going to play next week, against Essendon,” Joyce said.

“It’s a big week this week of increasing loading and making sure he’s being exposed to anything we would expect in an AFL match.

“His progress has been really pleasing thus far and if he continues this way we’ll see him take on the Bombers weekend after next.”

Toby Greene (foot) is aiming for a return before the GIANTS’ bye in round 13.

“He’s running now, and he’s shown some very good signs of progression in the last week. We’re targeting him for another couple of weeks,” Joyce said.

“He didn’t have a huge body of work in the pre-season and up until this point, so we just need to make sure his body is right.

“So, when he comes back it’s not just his toe that his fine, but his hamstring and his quads and his glutes and all those sorts of things are ready to see him through the back half of the season.”

The GIANTS take on North Melbourne on Saturday afternoon at Blundstone Arena in Hobart.
