The GIANTS will know more about Toby Greene’s foot injury in the coming days, with the star forward ruled out of the GIANTS’ clash with Brisbane.

Greene – who missed rounds two and three with hamstring soreness – won’t feature as the GIANTS return to Spotless Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“I can’t answer how severe the injury is because we’ll probably need the next 48 hours to find that out,” coach Leon Cameron told the media on Friday morning.

“He attempted to train on Wednesday, after he pulled up a little sore after the game last weekend and that didn’t go to the level that we wanted to, then he pulled up fine yesterday and we tested it again and clearly he’s not right.

“So today and Monday we’ll explore what’s actually wrong with his foot. Is it one week? Is it three weeks? We’ll probably find that out on Monday.

“It’s disappointing because clearly he’s a player that can contribute in our front half of the ground and we know a fully fit Toby Greene is better in the team than out of the team.”

Young forward Zac Langdon returns following a hand injury to take Greene’s place while Campbelltown product Nick Shipley will make his debut with ruck Dawson Simpson omitted.

With Rory Lobb still sidelined, it leaves the GIANTS without an out-and-out ruckman to face Brisbane, who boast one of the in-form ruckmen in the competition in Stefan Martin.

Cameron is backing a number of GIANTS, especially Jon Patton, to fulfil the ruck duties on Saturday and quell the around-the-ground influence of Martin, who is averaging 20.2 disposals and 35.2 hitouts per game in 2018.

“Clearly Stefan Martin is an outstanding ruck and you could argue that (Brodie) Grundy and Martin are the best two ruckmen in the competition, they just go toe-to-toe in terms of getting the ball,” he said.

“They follow up, they play as extra midfielders, so we’ve gone in with a different philosophy on that with guys like Patton to play a lot more ruck time and we’ll discuss using (Harry) Himmelberg and (Adam) Tomlinson but also in our back end we’ve got Aidan Corr.

“I think when you come up against these sorts of sides we’re really confident that the strategy we go in with can get the job done… Martin’s got a huge motor and we’ve got to make sure that when the ball comes to ground he can’t have the access that he has been having over the last few weeks.”
