The GIANTS have today taken another significant step in securing the club’s on-field future with Head Coach Leon Cameron and General Manager of Football Operations Wayne Campbell both extending their tenures at the club.

Already signed until the end of 2018, Cameron has committed to the club until at least the end of 2020 by which time he will have spent seven seasons as Head Coach.

After joining the club from the AFL in March last year, Campbell has also signed through to the end of 2020, a two-year extension to his initial contract.

GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said it was an obvious move to lock in the senior leaders of the club’s football program.

“Leon is absolutely the right man to lead our team right now and into the future,” said Mr Matthews.

“We had no hesitation in extending Leon’s contract and he had no hesitation in accepting that extension. As a quality person and clearly a quality coach, Leon is held in extremely high esteem at the club and is a hugely respected member of the broader GIANTS family.

“Since taking over the reins from Kevin Sheedy at the end of 2013, he has taken our club from strength to strength, including our maiden finals appearance last year.

“He’s had challenges thrown at him this season but has continued to take the club forward and further put his stamp on what is a brilliant culture amongst our players and staff alike. He sets an outstanding example every day, across all areas of our organisation.”

Leon Cameron said he’s looking forward to continuing to grow the club over the coming seasons.

“I’m very pleased that the CEO, General Manager of Football and the Board all have confidence in me to take this team forward,” Cameron said.

“It’s a privilege to be the Head Coach of such a committed, hard working group of players. This club is like family to us and I’m privileged to lead a fantastic group of players and coaches with an incredible support team around me.

“We have built a strong club, a club I’m proud to be part of long-term. We are all committed to continued growth and improvement and consistently putting ourselves in a position for success.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to Campbell’s impact on the football department over the past 18 months.

“Wayne’s brought significant experience and knowledge to his role since joining the club,” Mr Matthews said.

“He has helped shape the culture and performance of our side so far this season in addition to playing a leading role in the re-signing of a multitude of players.

“With his strong relationship with Leon and the rest of the football staff, we couldn’t be more pleased with his work at the club so far.”

Wayne Campbell said he was pleased with his transition to the GIANTS and the professional nature of the football program.

“I’ve enjoyed the past 18 and I’m particularly excited by what the future holds in the coming years here,” Mr Campbell said.

“We have an outstanding football department and indeed a growing organisation committed to success and hard work. I’m naturally delighted to be playing a role in that continued growth and success with an excellent group of players and staff.”
