The GIANTS have today placed ruckman Tom Downie on the long-term injury list.

Downie, 23, will take some time away from the game to deal with a mental health issue.

The GIANTS have been working closely with Tom, his family, his manager and the AFLPA with all parties agreeing that it’s in the player’s best interests to be placed on the long-term injury list.

GIANTS General Manager Football Wayne Campbell said a timeline won’t be put on Downie’s time away from the club.

“Tom’s been dealing with a mental health issue for a number of months and the club is doing everything possible to support him,” Campbell said.

“Tom’s welfare is our priority and those closest to him all agree that the best course of action is for him to step away from the game.

“Tom’s a very popular member of our playing group and he’s got the full support of the club.”

Downie was originally selected with pick 56 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft and has played nine AFL games.
