Every fortnight a group of five GIANTS players gather in a meeting room the GIANTS training and administration base, the Learning Life Centre.

But instead of learning about the game plan and the upcoming opposition, the group is looking towards the future.

Callan Ward, Heath Shaw, Aidan Corr, Rhys Palmer, and Tim Mohr are completing multiple qualifications in construction through Guest Building Learning, with the long-term goal of obtaining a Building Licence.

"Over a two to three year period, they'll complete a number of different certificates ranging from a certificate four in building and construction to leadership management," GIANTS Player Welfare Manager Dylan Addison said.

"Eventually, they'll apply for their own building license and that's the end goal for them."

Their study is part of the GIANTS' Off Field Development Program, which aims to grow GIANTS players away from the field.

"It's obviously important to transition from football to post-football life," Addison said.

"It's also about maximising your time in the AFL as there are some pretty unique opportunities to meet some interesting people with interesting connections.

"So utilising that time and those experiences is pretty important."

Addison - a former Bulldogs and GIANTS player - believes the next step is for the group is to put down the books and pick up some tools.

“Dyldam has been a great partner of the club for a number of years and we're looking at getting the guys on site with them at some stage," he said.

“They do a heap of work here in Western Sydney and are really open to helping the players transition to the next stage of their lives.

"Everyone knows that age old saying of being able to get the piece of paper is one part but you'll probably learn most of it on the job itself."

Building and construction isn't for everyone and the Off Field Development Program allows for GIANTS to complete a range of different qualifications.

"We've got guys who are doing AFL Sportsready courses, some doing personal training certificates," Addison said.

"There are a lot of guys at university studying a range of subjects from Arts degrees to business degrees and exercises science.

"There's a broad spectrum of courses that our players undertake and that comes with having 43 players on the list."
