Greater Western Sydney GIANTS ruckman Shane Mumford will undergo ankle surgery that will see him miss the rest of the season.

The 28-year old suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s match against Collingwood and will have an ankle reconstruction later this week.

The surgery will repair a torn deltoid ligament in Mumford’s left ankle.

Mumford was the GIANTS Club Champion in 2014, taking home the Kevin Sheedy medal, and has been in career best form this season.

The mobile ruckman has recorded the third most hit outs in the AFL and sits fourth across the competition for tackles.

“He’s seen a surgeon today and unfortunately they’re going to have to reconstruct his ankle which is disappointing,” GIANTS coach Leon Cameron said.

“He’s an important part of our footy club and everyone’s aware of what he’s done so far in his short time here.

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose him but the welfare of the player has to come first and the recommendation came pretty strongly to have a major operation on his ankle.

“He’ll probably go in and get it done in the next day or so. It’s probably a four to six month recovery so come pre-season he’ll be ready to roll.”

Meanwhile, co-captain Phil Davis will be sidelined for six to eight weeks with an ankle syndesmotic injury.

Midfielder Stephen Coniglio will miss the next two to three weeks with a grade two AC joint injury also suffered in the final term at the MCG.

Defender Joel Patfull’s broken ribs and punctured lung will keep him out for the next six to eight weeks as well.

In better injury news for the GIANTS, defender Lachie Plowman will play his first match for the season this weekend.

Plowman dislocated his elbow in January and will line up for the UWS GIANTS in the NEAFL on Saturday.

The GIANTS host North Melbourne at Spotless Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park this Saturday at 4.35pm
