Courageous co-captain Callan Ward was the GIANTS’ star on Brownlow Medal night as he became the first GIANTS player to poll double digits on the AFL’s night of nights.

Ward finished in equal-11th place with 15 votes, 11 behind 2014 Brownlow Medallist Matt Priddis, from the West Coast Eagles.

Entering the count with 15 career votes in total, an outstanding 2014 season saw Ward poll votes in six games, including four best-on-ground performances.

In the first shock for the night, Ward missed out on any votes in the GIANTS’ historic win over the Sydney Swans in Round 1, despite being awarded the Brett Kirk Medal for Best On Ground after his 31-possessions and goal in the victory.

But he bounced back quickly, polling three votes in the GIANTS’ narrow loss to St Kilda in Round 2 and one vote in the GIANTS’ win over Melbourne in Round 3.

Despite the GIANTS losing to Port Adelaide by 35-points in Round 7, Ward collected the two votes for his career-high 40 touches and 11 marks.

Ward then collected three votes for Best On Ground performances against Hawthorn in Round 11, and in the GIANTS’ back-to-back wins against Brisbane and Carlton in Rounds 13 and 14.

It was an outstanding season for the 24-year-old, who finished runner up in the Kevin Sheedy Medal to ruckman Shane Mumford.

Mumford polled eight votes, including Best On Ground performances against the Swans in Round 1 and Melbourne in Round 3.

Gun midfielder Adam Treloar collected five votes to finish in the top three for the GIANTS with ineligible duo Devon Smith (four votes) and Toby Greene (three votes) rounding out the club’s top five.

Stephen Coniglio, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Rhys Palmer and Lachie Whitfield all collected two votes, while Josh Hunt, Tom Scully and Dylan Shiel finished with one each.
