Young defender Nick Haynes will miss three months of football after breaking his ankle in last weekend’s loss to the Eagles.

Haynes landed awkwardly on his ankle just minutes into the match at Patersons Stadium in Perth on Sunday and was immediately subbed out.

Scans showed Haynes had a fracture in the medial malleolus at the base of the tibia and he underwent surgery on Wednesday to have a screw inserted in the ankle.

Rehabilitation will take three months, with the promising defender a chance to return for the final rounds of the season.

After playing 19 games prior to this season, the 21-year-old has been one of the GIANTS’ best defenders in the first eight matches, averaging 16 disposals and four marks a game.

In better news for the GIANTS, several big names are expected to return for the game against the Richmond Tigers at Spotless Stadium on May 24.

Jeremy Cameron was not allowed to fly to Perth after perforating his eardrum but is expected to line up against the Tigers for the GIANTS’ first home game in Sydney in six weeks.

Adam Treloar and Curtly Hampton both missed the game against the Eagles with ankle soreness but are also expected to be available.

After missing five weeks after minor knee surgery, ruckman Shane Mumford will also face a fitness test along with Tom Boyd and Stephen Gilham.

Key defender Tim Mohr (foot and knee) and midfielder Sam Schulz (shoulder) both made successful returns from long-term injuries in the UWS GIANTS’ game against the Sydney Swans reserves last Friday.

Co-captain Phil Davis remains sidelined indefinitely due to a kidney injury sustained in Round 1.
