Australia has already provided Denmark with a Princess and now the Northern-European country may have a new Prince with number one draft pick Tom Boyd stealing the headlines after becoming a GIANT.

Boyd’s mother Anita is Danish and he visited Denmark for the fourth time when he went to the capital, Copenhagen, for three days as part of the AIS-AFL Academy tour in April.

The day after Thursday’s NAB AFL Draft, Boyd appeared on the front page of the mx newspaper with a headline that roughly translated to: “Young half-Dane breaks through in Australian Football”.

mx (formerly MetroXpress) is the most widely-read newspaper in Denmark, with an audience of approximately 500,000 readers daily and 250,000 views on their website.

Three days after the article about Boyd went to print, it was still prominently featured in their sports section.

The front page photo was accompanied by a large article in the sports section with another headline: “Half-Danish Tom is ready to be a sports star in Australia”.

"I got a call from a Danish newspaper shortly after the draft and they were pretty excited about me being taken by the GIANTS with the No.1 pick," Boyd said on Tuesday.

"My mum grew up there and I've spent some time in Denmark too. I've got a lot of family there and I think it's great that they're getting exposed to the AFL.

"Hopefully the whole country can jump on board the GIANTS."

AFL Europe General Manager Ben MacCormack said coverage of AFL outside of Australia is few and far between.

"To be on the front page of such a highly read paper is huge and it highlights what players with European heritage like Tom can do to help the profile of the sport in Europe," MacCormack said.

"The Danish AFL work really hard to grow the game and have produced some brilliant young talent like Aksel Bang who spent some time with GWS.

"Tom was great whilst on the AIS tour over here as well and we are certain GWS have a future star. Denmark certainly do."
