GIANTS midfielder Dylan Shiel will undergo surgery on a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee.

Shiel will have an exploratory arthroscope later this week which will determine the extent of the injury.

He looks likely to be sidelined for somewhere between six to 12 weeks.

The 22-year old, who has been in career best form in 2015, suffered the injury in the second term of the GIANTS 35-point victory over St Kilda at Spotless Stadium on Sunday.

GIANTS Head of Athletic Performance David Joyce said: “Dylan has met with the knee surgeon today and it has been decided that we need to explore the extent of the damage arthroscopically.

“Depending on what we find will determine the surgical approach, which will then guide our return to performance timelines.

“This could be as little as six weeks and as long as three months depending on what we find.”

Further updates on Shiel’s injury will be given when more information is available later in the week.

In other injury news, experienced defender Joel Patfull is nearing a return having missed the last three games with a rib injury.

Co-captain Phil Davis remains in the rehab group with an ankle injury and young forward Pat McKenna is a chance to return to the NEAFL this weekend after missing last weekend’s match with achilles soreness.
