The UWS GIANTS will play Eastlake in a sudden death elimination final of the NEAFL in Canberra this Saturday.

The UWS GIANTS finished fifth after the end of the home and away season after going down to the Brisbane Lions by 11 points at Yeronga.

The Lions started the game well and took a 34 point lead at half time. Kicking into a strong breeze, the GIANTS fought back in the third term to kick five goals and reduce the margin to 26 points at the final break.

The GIANTS continued to take it up to their more experienced opponents kicking four goals to one in the last quarter but could not bridge the gap.

UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand says it was pleasing to put in a good performance ahead of the club’s first finals appearance.

“It was a good effort to push Brisbane like we did. We nearly could have snuck away with a win,” said Hand.

“With the exception of a few silly mistakes and some decision making, I was impressed with how we fought the game out for four quarters.

“Sam Schultz and  Anthony Miles on ball were fantastic with their strength and leadership while Josh Bruce was really solid with some strong marks and defended well.

“James Stewart probably played his best game, playing with some energy and leading up well and all the forwards applying pressure was really pleasing.

“It’s great for the club to make the finals and hopefully get a winning feeling around the place. The boys are up and about this week, and we tend to travel well so looking forward to the challenge against Eastlake.

"We would love to see all our fans in Canberra come out and support us this Saturday in what is an important day for the club."
