A standout performance by midfielder Mark Whiley has helped the UWS Giants to a 60-point win over Gold Coast Suns Reserves at Metricon Stadium.

Whiley accumulated a game-high 39 possessions and kicked three goals while Dylan Shiel kicked two majors in his first game back from a quad injury.

UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand said he couldn’t ask much more from his charges after a four-quarter effort against quality opposition.

“We dominated the game and won the contested ball for most of the match which was great,” Hand said.

“Whiley was outstanding at stoppages but also gathered 13 uncontested touches which shows he was working hard to get into space.

“His last month has been solid and his performance on the weekend was phenomenal.”

Whiley has been a consistent performer for UWS, taking out the GIANTS’ NEAFL Player of the Year in 2013.

Hand said Nathan Wilson had a breakout game with 31 touches and seven inside-50s, while Jake Barrett, Stephen Gilham and Cam McCarthy also impressed.

Jacob Townsend and Dylan Addison bullied their smaller-bodied opponents and added some toughness around contests.

The UWS GIANTS next play Ainslie at StarTrack Oval Canberra on Saturday in a curtain raiser to the GIANTS versus Port Adelaide clash.

GIANTS 17.20 (122) defeated Gold Coast Suns Reserves 9.8 (62)
