Every Saturday in Berlin’s famous Schillerpark a team of eager GIANTS spend two hours filling rabbit holes and marking lines in the grass with baking flour.

They do this, much to the bemusement of sun-baking locals, so they can clear a field for a 9-a-side footy match played as part of the Berlin Australian Football League.

This committed team, formerly known as the South Berlin Demons, have recently changed their name to the South Berlin GIANTS.

They are the latest club to adopt the GIANTS' name and colours and join more than 20 other community teams who have now taken on the GIANTS name globally.

Other affiliated clubs include the Dongguan GIANTS (China), South East London GIANTS (England), the North Leinster GIANTS (Ireland), the Zaprude GIANTS (Croatia) and the Skane GIANTS (Sweden).EndFragment

South Berlin GIANTS player Jan Meinecke said the club was proud to align with another up-and-coming football side.

“It’s an exciting partnership because there are so many similarities between us,” Meinecke said.

"Berlin, like Sydney, is very much a multicultural hub and we have a great mix of players from different nationalities and backgrounds.

"Many of our players have never been to Australia but got invited out by mates or just wanted to try something new.

“Like the GIANTS we are trying to grow the sport of Australian Rules in a place where it’s not traditionally prominent.

“Because we play in a public park we always have locals who come up and ask who we are and what we’re doing. It’s great to explain the sport to them."

The South Berlin GIANTS have players from a variety of different countries including Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan, France and Ireland.

After not winning a match last season the South Berlin GIANTS have improved dramatically, making the final of the BAFL pre-season cup last month.
