GIANTS defender Heath Shaw will be officially inducted as a Life Member of the AFL at the 2019 Annual General Meeting in March.

The honour was confirmed by the AFL Commission this week after Shaw passed a total of 300 matches during the 2018 season including pre-season and finals appearances.

The 33-year-old has played 259 home and away games, 23 finals and 26 pre-season games across a 15-season career with Collingwood and the GIANTS.

Shaw was drafted by the Magpies as a father-son selection in the 2003 National Draft, playing 173 games in the black and white including the club’s drought-breaking 2010 Premiership.

The dashing defender earned his place in the club’s folklore after his desperate effort to stop St Kilda’s Nick Riewoldt from kicking a goal - since dubbed 'The Smother of the Century' - in the 2010 Grand Final Replay.

A trade to the GIANTS at the end of 2013 saw Shaw take his game to another level and he was named the club’s vice-captain from 2014-2016.

Shaw’s impressive 2015 season saw him named in the Virgin Australia All Australian team and win the Kevin Sheedy Medal as the GIANTS’ club champion.

In 2016, Shaw helped the GIANTS reach their maiden finals appearance, with the defender claiming another All Australian honour in the process.

Shaw has played 109 games for the GIANTS since making his debut for the club in round one, 2014, and with the veteran currently sitting on 282 AFL games, he could reach the 300-game milestone in 2019.
