The past month of football has been tough for the GIANTS and Fremantle with the two sides sharing one win between them.

As Saturday’s clash at Spotless Stadium draws nearer, let’s take a look at the stats that could have an impact on this must win game.

The game will be could be decided by the team who can assert their dominance in contested football.

Fremantle is a strong tackling side (ranked third in total tackles pre-clearance over the past month) while the GIANTS are also equally strong around the stoppages (second in the AFL for pre-clearance tackles).

Despite both sides’ form they have been getting to the ground ball more often than their opponents with the GIANTS ranked first in the AFL across the past month for ground ball gets pre-clearance at +7.8 per game.

Fremantle meanwhile are ranked fourth, winning +3.5 more ground ball gets per game than their opponents.

The GIANTS and the Dockers have both been beating their opponents across the last month when it comes to clearances too.

The GIANTS are third in the AFL for clearance differential (winning 4.5 more clearances per-game than their opposition) while Freo are just behind in fifth spot (winning 2.2 more clearances per-game).

With both teams winning the contested football and clearances form stoppages, they’ve been able to launch numerous attacks.

Fremantle averaged 48.2 inside 50s over the past month, slightly less than the GIANTS’ 52.8.

An abundance of inside 50s doesn’t mean much though if you can’t convert from them and Fremantle have found that out the hard way.

Over the past month the Dockers have been the second most inaccurate team in front of goal, with just 52.9 per cent of their shots resulting in goals. The GIANTS, while not winning games, are ranked third in the league for accuracy in front of goals, converting 61.4 per cent of their shots into goals.

And finally, despite the fact that both sides have been in underwhelming form over the past month, they have both had impressive defensive records.

Both teams have been able to keep their opponents to under 90 points across the past month with the GIANTS averaging 81.2 points against and Fremantle 86.2.

The GIANTS take on Fremantle as the showpiece game in the 2017 Toyota AFL Multicultural Round at 2.10pm on Saturday, July 29 at Spotless Stadium. Click here for tickets.
