Midfielder Stephen Coniglio will get the chance to captain the GIANTS on Thursday night, leading a young side against the Western Bulldogs in Canberra.

With Phil Davis an emergency for the match and Callan Ward not named in the squad, coach Leon Cameron has handed Coniglio the captain’s armband after having been named in the club’s emerging leaders group in recent seasons.

While Davis and Ward won’t be beside him, Coniglio will run out with plenty of experience right behind him including 100-gamers Tom Scully, Rhys Palmer and Joel Patfull.

Coming into his fifth season in the AFL, the former number two draft pick had a career-best year in 2015, playing as a run-with midfielder, and performed some big jobs for the GIANTS.

The 22-year-old has now played 62 games for the club and re-signed with the GIANTS through to the end of 2017 in the middle of last season.

The GIANTS’ leadership group for 2016 will be announced after the NAB Challenge series.

Coniglio and coach Leon Cameron will speak to the media in Canberra before training today with full coverage on gwsgiants.com.au.

The GIANTS take on the Western Bulldogs at 7.10pm on Thursday, February 25 at Manuka Oval in Canberra. 2016 GIANTS members can scan their membership card at the gate for free general admission entry or click here to purchase an upgrade or a ticket.
