Young ruckman Andrew Phillips has pushed his claim for senior selection with a dominant performance in the UWS GIANTS' 111-point thrashing of Belconnen at Kippax Oval in Canberra.

After an even first quarter in soggy conditions, the UWS GIANTS took control, restricting their opponents to just one goal for the match.

UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand commended his team for playing a selfless style of football.

“We were kicking against a strong breeze in the first quarter so it was pleasing to weather the storm in defence and then take control,” Hand said.

“The boys stuck to the game plan and helped each other out which gave us lots of opportunities running up the ground.”

The UWS GIANTS had 14 individual goal-kickers, including last year’s number one draft pick Tom Boyd who slotted three goals.

“Boydy was great in the ruck and up forward but we also had a great spread of contributors from different positions,” Hand said.

“We got some goals from running the ball end-to-end, other goals from hit-up leads and also from bombing the ball long down the line.

“It was great to have a cross-section and not rely too much on one particular option.”

Hand said Phillips was outstanding in ruck, while Jonathan O’Rourke was dominant through the midfield.

After a promising debut season in 2012 after he was promoted from the rookie list, Phillips did not manage a senior game last year because of persistent hamstring injuries.

Matt Buntine, Stephen Gilham and Aidan Corr were all rock-solid in defence and provided drive from the backline.

The convincing win moves UWS GIANTS to fifth place on the NEAFL ladder, with only percentage separating them from second position.

UWS GIANTS have the bye this week but are already looking ahead to their next match against Gold Coast Reserves at Metricon Stadium on April 26.
