Defenders Nick Haynes and Lachie Plowman helped the UWS GIANTS to a 19-point victory against Sydney Hills Eagles in their NEAFL match at Bruce Purser Reserve.

Haynes and Plowman were the GIANTS best and their performances put them in the mix for a recall to the senior team this weekend when the GIANTS host Geelong at SKODA Stadium on Saturday.

Anthony Miles and Sam Reid once again put in strong displays in the midfield and Liam Sumner, Mark Whiley and Reid all kicked three goals.

The GIANTS dominated the first two quarters, taking a 36 point into half time but failed to capatalise in the third term, allowing the Eagles to get within six points at the final change.

The GIANTS steadied in the last quarter kicking five goals to win their first match in five weeks.

UWS GIANTS Coach Brett Hand says he’s pleased with the final result. “I’m happy to escape with a win in the end and the way we responded in the fourth quarter was pleasing,” said Hand.

“The Eagles got on top winning the contested ball and at the stoppages in the third term, but we should have been further up as we let them kick some easy goals in the first half.”

Hand says there were some pleasing performances from players who’ve already tasted senior football this year.

“Nick Haynes’ ability to assist was very good, he had good starting points and he was involved in running the ball out of the back line a lot,” said Hand.

“Lachie Plowman was given a job on the opposition’s key forward and did well for the majority of the match.

“Miles and Reid once again put in good efforts in the midfield and it was pleasing to see Liam Sumner looking really good. He was lively, chased well and had some spark back kicking three goals.”

The UWS GIANTS now head to Darwin to take on the NT Thunder on Saturday in what Hand says will be a tough challenge for his young group.

“We haven’t beaten the Thunder up there before and it will be a great opportunity for our team up against a side with some mature bodies and a lot of pace.”
