AFL football is set to return to NSW and the ACT with a bang in 2022, with a mouthwatering fixture of home games in Sydney and Canberra announced today.

As revealed Saturday, the GIANTS will kick off their 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership Season campaign at home with a blockbuster Battle of the Bridge clash on March 19 against the Swans at Accor Stadium (formerly Stadium Australia) in round one.

ACT-based GIANTS fans are in for a treat with confirmation the club will play four AFL games at Manuka Oval in 2022.

After defeating the Swans by just one point in a thrilling elimination final in Launceston last time they met, the GIANTS are looking forward to a loud return in front of a home crowd.

A record breaking 60,222 fans packed out Accor Stadium the last time the two teams played at the venue in 2016, the highest-ever attendance between the two Sydney clubs as well as the GIANTS’ inaugural finals win.

The team will make their highly anticipated return to GIANTS Stadium in round three when they take on the Gold Coast Suns on March 27, as well as hosting powerhouse clubs Carlton, West Coast, the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Essendon at their home in Sydney Olympic Park.

After missing out on games throughout 2020 and 2021 due to the disrupted COVID seasons, GIANTS football will be back with a bang in 2022 with an additional Canberra home game added to the fixture.

The GIANTS will kick off their campaign in the nation’s capital with a blockbuster clash when they face St Kilda on Friday night in round six to kick off ANZAC Round, before welcoming Geelong back to Canberra in round eight for a semi-final re-match.

ACT fans will also see the Brisbane Lions and Fremantle travel to the Capital to round out the Canberra fixture.

The GIANTS have been scheduled to take on cross-town rivals the Swans twice, as well as the Dockers, Lions, Blues and the Bulldogs.

With exactly 100 days until game one of the 2022 AFL season, GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said he is looking forward to seeing the orange and charcoal fill stadiums in Sydney and Canberra in 2022.

"After the chaos and disruption of the past two seasons, we just can’t wait to get life - and football - back to normal with a full AFL season in Sydney and Canberra in 2022,” Mr Matthews said.

“Our members and fans have been remarkably loyal, and we’re delighted to reward them with an exciting fixture that has highlights for everyone.

“Put round one in your diary as we get set to return with a bang at Accor Stadium for what’s sure to be one of the biggest Derbies in history.

“We’re also excited to be hosting games in a mix of family-friendly timeslots at GIANTS Stadium when we take on the Suns, Carlton and West Coast in the first half of the season.

“It’s great to be able to reward our Canberra community with an extra game in 2022 after not being able to take any games to the nation’s capital in 2020 and again missing games in 2021.

“It’s been a tough few years but we’re ready for a Big Big 2022 and we hope our members and fans are too.”
