With 30 years of experience in the game, McConnell has been integral in the establishment of the GIANTS and was the first person appointed to the club in 2009.

He played 37 games for Footscray and was the last coach of Fitzroy before it merged with Brisbane at the end of 1996. He was also an Assistant Coach at Geelong.

More recently he was the AIS-AFL Academy’s High Performance Coach before taking on the role of Football Administration and Development Coach with the GIANTS.

After working with the forward line in 2013, McConnell became the Director of Coaching under Senior Coach Leon Cameron.

In 2018 McConnell took up the reins as Head Coach of the club's AFL Women's side, leading them to fourth on the ladder. 2020 will be his third season as the GIANTS' AFLW coach.
