With 30 years of experience in the game, McConnell has been integral in the establishment of the GIANTS and was the first person appointed to the club in 2009.

He played 37 games for Footscray and was the last coach of Fitzroy before it merged with Brisbane at the end of 1996. He was also an Assistant Coach at Geelong.

More recently he was the AIS-AFL Academy’s High Performance Coach before taking on the role of Football Administration and Development Coach with the GIANTS.

After working with the forward line in 2013, McConnell became the Director of Coaching under Senior Coach Leon Cameron.

In 2018, McConnell took up the reins as Head Coach of the club's AFL Women's side. He led them to their first finals appearance in 2020. From 2021, McConnell will continue as Head Coach of the AFLW side and also work as the new Female Academy Development Manager.
