PLAYER BIO

Tim Taranto joined the GIANTS with pick two in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft. He elevated himself among the best junior talents with his smarts around goal and an innate ability to find the footy. Taranto is incredibly athletic, running a level 15.9 beep test, but matching that with footy sense. Tough and competitive, and a great overhead mark around the ground, Taranto made his debut in round one, 2018 after an impressive JLT Series. Taranto won a Rising Star nomination in his first season and has become a mainstay of the GIANTS’ midfield in just two seasons.

After spending 2017 across half-forward, Taranto played more time as a midfielder and wingman in 2018 and delivered on the promise he showed in his debut season. Taranto averaged 20.8 disposals and 6.1 tackles in his 23 games and finished equal third at the GIANTS in contested possessions and fourth for clearances. Played some important roles floating forward but kicked 6.14 – and his kicking remains the youngster’s only concern. With the departures of Dylan Shiel and Tom Scully, Taranto’s midfield time will grow again this year, and along with Jacob Hopper, he’ll be a crucial part of the on-ball division.

The GIANTS’ top pick at the 2016 NAB AFL Draft had an immediate impact in his first year and showed his toughness in the JLT Community Series when he bounced back to his feet after being crunched by star Swan Lance Franklin. Made his debut in round one and played 12 of the first 14 games before a serious ankle injury. Such was the GIANTS’ faith in Taranto, he was recalled for the club’s last two finals and averaged 16 possessions and 3.5 tackles in those games. He spent most of last year playing across half-forward, but should get more mid eld time this season to show off his cool head and excellent hands in close.

The GIANTS' top pick impressed club recruiters with his ability to stand up in big games last year and he is certain to feature at senior level this season. Taranto will initially make his way as a forward who can take a grab, but will eventually move into the midfield, where his big body and elite endurance make him an ideal package.
