Player Bio

Sam Taylor is a tall defender from Swan Districts in Perth and was selected at pick 28 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft. He is a strong overhead and very composed when under pressure. He uses the ball well when setting up play from defence and is team-oriented. Hailing from WA, he is the third of seven children. The quietly-spoken key defender impressed in his first season, earning a Rising Star nomination in his sixth game.

Expected to spend his debut season in 2018 developing his body and game in the NEAFL, Taylor forced the GIANTS to pick him in the senior team after a string of dominant performances in the lower level. The West Australian took bags of marks and, when he was picked in round 11 against Adelaide, looked immediately comfortable against bigger bodies and more-experienced opponents. Taylor is softly spoken but is a competitive animal
on the field and has the toughness to make him an outstanding prospect as an old-school key defender. He suffered a hamstring strain in round 20 and, unfortunately for the GIANTS, never made it back on the field for the season, which upset their mix in defence. Should be a regular in the back half this year.

The West Australian key defender will take time to develop alongside senior players Phil Davis, Adam Tomlinson and Aidan Corr, but impressed in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with his strong overhead marking and steadiness under pressure. An All-Australian for WA last year, the athletic Taylor is a good ball-user for his size.
