Player Bio

Journeyman Sam Reid first began his AFL career in 2008 after being drafted to the Western Bulldogs. He played 10 games for the club before joining the GIANTS as an uncontracted player in 2011. Injuries limited him to 14 games in his two seasons at the club and persistent shoulder issues forced him into retirement at the end of 2013. Reid remained at the club as a Development Coach and captained the NEAFL side. After two years of strong performances in the NEAFL, Reid was placed on the GIANTS’ rookie list ahead of the 2016 season. Reid has taken full advantage of his second chance, playing 40 games across three season. Reid has played predominantly as a forward but has also been used as a tagger to great effect. He married long-time partner Elissa at the end of 2018.‚Äč

One of the club favourites, Reid finally played his 50th game last year in his ninth season in the AFL. Made 21 appearances to be a consistent contributor. His leg speed and versatility mean he can perform different roles and is a valuable asset for Leon Cameron.

The journeyman played 13 senior games last year and showed his versatility by playing as a defensive forward and small defender, while also moving through the midfield in a tagging role.

Worked his way on to the senior list with outstanding and consistent NEAFL form and proved to be a handy option across half-forward in six games late in the season. A ready and willing competitor when called upon.

After retiring at the end of the 2013 season, Reid spent the next two years in a development role at the GIANTS while also captaining the NEAFL side, where he showed he still has the ability to play senior football. At 26, his experience around the club will be vital.
