Player Bio

Jacob Hopper is a medium midfielder with an excellent work ethic who has the ability to win the football both on the inside and outside. A bright midfielder with excellent composure with the ball in hand, Hopper makes smart decisions. A former captain of the NSW/ACT Rams at the 2015 Under-18 National Championships, Hopper is part of the club's emerging leaders program. Hopper played 10 games in his first season, earning a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination on debut. He also featured in both of the GIANTS' finals in 2016 and after overcoming injuries in 2017 starred in the club's finals campaign.

The young midfielder had a consistent season averaging 21 possessions in 21 appearances and kicked 10 goals when resting forward. Hopper is one of the GIANTS’ best inside ball-winners and will only get better as he develops his game alongside co-captain Callan Ward. Will take on more responsibility this season with Dylan Shiel and Tom Scully no longer at the club, but he’s a highly rated member of the GIANTS’ team and will relish that opportunity. He can also take a grab for his size which makes him a tough match-up when he floats forward.

The GIANTS had big hopes for their young midfielder last year, but he was one of many to have his season ruined by injury. Hopper had off-season heart surgery and struggled with lower back issues over the pre-season, but after playing six games early in the year, he broke a finger against St Kilda in round seven and required an operation. He injured his ankle while training to make another comeback, but the positive to take from the season was that he returned in round 20 and played the final seven games. Hopper’s 27 possessions in the preliminary final loss to the Tigers was his season-best and showcased his inside ball-winning ability. The GIANTS were ecstatic to re-sign the young gun alongside good mate Josh Kelly last September.

The highly regarded midfielder was the club's top draft selection in 2015 and lived up to the hype with a brilliant debut in round 8 last season, when he racked up 32 possessions against Gold Coast and earned himself a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination. A back injury cost him seven games mid-season, but he made it back for the last four games of the year. Had a quiet finals series, but averaged 17.2 touches in his 10 games for the year, with 8.6 of those contested. He looked comortable and classy at stoppages and should be set for a massive second season in the competition.

The GIANTS' Academy star captained NSW/ACT in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships last year and was named All-Australian after the carnival. The impressive on-baller has a physique ready-made to step up to senior level this season and can win plenty of the ball inside and out, while possessing the ability to drift forward and kick goals.
