Player Bio

Harry Himmelberg is an extremely mobile tall forward who relocated to Canberra from the Riverina once he finished school after an injury-interrupted 2014. A member of the GIANTS Academy, he was a regular top-up for the GIANTS in the NEAFL during his Under-19s year. Once arriving at the GIANTS as a first-round selection in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft, Himmelberg enjoyed a successful switch to defence and was selected to make his AFL debut in round 17, 2016. 2017 saw Himmelberg play forward and down back before he established himself as a forward during the GIANTS' finals campaign, kicking a career-high four goals in the club's Preliminary Final. A star on the rise, Himmelberg played every game in 2018. His brother Elliott plays at the Adelaide Crows.‚Äč

Carried his form from the 2017 finals series into a breakout season last year and provided the GIANTS with the handy tall forward option they needed with Jeremy Cameron (suspension) and Jonathon Patton (injury) missing multiple games. Himmelberg kicked 29.21 in 24 games and mixed his work with goals from contested marks and on the ground. After switching between defence and attack in his first two seasons at the GIANTS, the gifted youngster looks to have found a home inside 50. If he can tighten up his finishing on the scoreboard, Himmelberg could be a 40-goal forward and take pressure off Cameron and Toby Greene as the club’s main goalkickers.

After arriving at the GIANTS as a forward, Himmelberg played the majority of his football as a defender in 2016, but it was his move back to the forward 50 that saw him play 12 games last year. Didn’t manage a senior game until round seven and was dropped a couple of times during the season, but played six of the last seven games as a defensive forward. Himmelberg performed solid roles on the likes of Jeremy McGovern and Alex Rance during the finals and kicked four goals in the preliminary final loss to Richmond at the MCG. Is unlikely to be a permanent part of the side as a forward, but in his third season could be used as a swingman at both ends of the ground.

Drafted as a forward, Himmelberg relished a switch into defence in the 2016 pre-season and averaged 21.7 possessions a game in the NEAFL, before earning his senior debut across half-back in round 17 last season. The GIANTS' Academy product showed plenty of poise and a cool head and looked right at home in his four senior games, where he averaged 13.2 disposals a match. Another full pre-season should see the smooth-moving defender push for more game time in the pre-season competition.

A key forward with plenty of X-factor, Himmelberg loves to lead up at the ball and has fantastic mobility. Another player to graduate from the GIANTS' Academy, Himmelberg played at under-18 level for NSW/ACT and was best on ground for the Allies against the NAB AFL Academy side on Grand Final Day last year.
