PLAYER BIO

Dawson Simpson was selected by the Geelong Cats in the 2007 national draft and spent eight seasons at Kardinya Park. Over that period Simpson played 28 AFL games and kicked four goals He debuted in round three, 2010 against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval and was a member of the Cats' 2012 VFL premiership. Simpson joined the GIANTS as an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2015 and made an impressive debut for the club in round 19, 2017 winning 44 hit outs. He played nine games in 2018 before a season-ending injury. A qualified personal trainer, Simpson also runs weekly fitness classes for the staff at the club.‚Äč

The towering ruckman found senior opportunities tough to come by in the first half of last year despite the retirement of Shane Mumford, but assumed the No. 1 role in round 14 and became an important player in seven successive appearances before he was injured. With Mumford back at the club after one year of retirement, Simpson will have another battle to be the starting ruckman in 2019, but showed last season he can be relied on to be an important contributor.

A massive surprise packet for the GIANTS last year, Simpson was a dominant force in the NEAFL, being named the starting ruckman in the Team of the Year, and his form saw him play two senior games late in the season in the absence of the injured Shane Mumford. The big man averaged 48 hit-outs in 15 NEAFL games and used his size and strength to great advantage. Showed in his two appearances in the AFL that he’s more than capable of being a valuable player at the top level and could get more of a look in this year with Mumford gone.

Simpson didn't play a senior game after being brought in as a back-up ruckman for Shane Mumford last year, but added valuable leadership to the club. Averaged 30.7 hit-outs in 18 games in the NEAFL and was an important player in the club's premiership win.

Played just 28 games in his six years at Geelong but will provide a big-bodied option to cover for Shane Mumford, something the GIANTS lacked last season. Injuries have plagued the former Cat and he is unlikely to see much senior action if Mumford is fit, with his lack of mobility a concern around the ground. Will provide plenty of competition for younger big men Rory Lobb and Tom Downie to become second in line to 2014 club champion Mumford.
