The fixture for the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s Season has been unveiled with the GIANTS to play four home games, including three in Sydney and one in Canberra.

After a lockout crowd at Drummoyne Oval in 2018 the GIANTS will return to the ground for the club’s first AFLW home game of 2019, before playing two games at Blacktown International SportsPark and one at UNSW Canberra Oval.

While still consisting of seven rounds, the 2019 fixture is different to the previous two seasons due to the addition of the Geelong and North Melbourne Tasmania Kangaroos teams.

Rather than playing each team once, the competition will be split into two conferences consisting of five teams with the GIANTS part of Conference B alongside Brisbane, Collingwood, Carlton and Geelong.

The GIANTS will play each team in their conference once before playing Melbourne, Adelaide and North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos from Conference A.

Under the new fixture, finals will also look different with the top two teams from each conference to play off in Preliminary Finals ahead of a Grand Final to be held on the weekend of March 30/31. Entry to all AFLW games will again be free in 2019.

The GIANTS open their AFLW campaign against 2018 runners up Brisbane at Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex on Sunday, February 3 before playing their first home game on a Friday night at Drummoyne Oval in round two against the Kangaroos on February 8.

AFLW action then returns to Blacktown International SportsPark in round three with the GIANTS taking on Carlton on Saturday, February 16 followed by an away game against Collingwood in the Victorian town of Morwell (two hours east of Melbourne) on Sunday, February 24.

Round five will see the Melbourne Demons return to Blacktown International SportsPark to face the GIANTS on Sunday, March 3.

The GIANTS will then play Adelaide in the penultimate round of the season at Unley Oval on Sunday, March 10 before the GIANTS’ AFLW home and away season concludes with a blockbuster Friday night clash against new team Geelong at UNSW Canberra Oval on Friday, March 15.

“Last year we saw more than 5,000 Sydneysiders at Drummoyne Oval on a Friday night to support our AFL Women’s team, so we’re thrilled to be able to play at an iconic inner-city venue in that timeslot again,” GIANTS CEO David Matthews said.

“We have a great balance across the fixture with two home games in our Western Sydney heartland at Blacktown as well as a Friday night blockbuster for our Canberra fans, who we know always turn out in droves.

“We’re proud to be the only team to represent NSW and the ACT in the national AFLW competition and look forward to welcoming our members and fans, as well as many more new faces, in 2019, across our four home games.”
