Former Collingwood premiership defender Heath Shaw has been appointed vice-captain of the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS.

Inaugural co-captains of the GIANTS Callan Ward and Phil Davis will again lead the club in 2014, with Tom Scully the other vice-captain.

Former Swans premiership ruckman Shane Mumford and former Hawthorn premiership defender Stephen Gilham complete the leadership group.

Head Coach Leon Cameron said Shaw thoroughly deserved his elevation to the vice captaincy.

"Heath and Shane have brought a lot of energy to the playing group and the young players have really embraced them as leaders of the club," Cameron said.

"They are not just talented and experienced players but also possess sharp football brains and know what it takes to achieve ultimate success in the game.

"They are extremely professional in their approach and we expect them to give us a big lift both on and off the field in the coming years."

Shaw, 28, joined the GIANTS at the end of last season after 173 games for Collingwood where he was a member of its 2010 premiership side.

Shaw said he was thrilled to be part of the leadership group.

“The move up here has been really exciting and the young group has given me a new lease on life,” he said.

“This is a real privilege and hopefully I can add something to the club and to this group and get them up and running and build a successful team as quick as possible.

“Naturally I tend to lead and direct as a backman, but to have this added responsibility is good for my game and I’m looking forward to developing this group and hopefully empowering the younger players as well,” he said.
