Player Bio

Nick Haynes was drafted to the GIANTS with pick seven in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft. The former Dandenong Stingrays forward made his debut in Round 10, 2012 playing through the midfield and up forward. Haynes has great agility, takes a good overhead mark and shows very good running and aerobic capacity. A switch to the backline proved a turning point for Haynes who has gone on to cement himself as a key member of the GIANTS' defence, playing a crucial role in the GIANTS' 2016 and 2017 finals campaigns.

The gifted defender was in All-Australian contention last year until he went down against the Western Bulldogs in round six and missed the next six games with a hamstring injury. Haynes is a gun intercept marker for the GIANTS, which makes him a vital member of the back six, and his versatility to play on talls and smalls is also a major asset for the side. Had 20-plus touches in just five of his 19 games last year, so finding more of the ball should be something he is aiming for. That would make him even more dangerous for the opposition and help cover the loss of Nathan Wilson.

Made a late start to the year after off-season groin surgery, but returned in round six to have an outstanding 2016 in defence, playing 18 of the last 19 games. Haynes was a standout in the back half where his intercept marking and courage in the air helped the GIANTS create plenty of attacking moves from deep inside their defensive 50. At just 24, Haynes is one of the brightest young prospects in the competition.

The talented defender had a terrific season and if not for a nagging groin problem that cost him five games, would have finished higher than his equal-10th in the best and fairest. Reads the ball beautifully and uses his vision to fly for marks even when under pressure inside the defensive 50.

After a strong finish to 2013, Haynes carried that form into 2014. Creating run off half-back and able to play on tall and smaller forwards, his development was on track before disaster struck in the round eight clash with West Coast in Perth, with a broken ankle ending his season. He will be hell-bent on making up for lost time.

Haynes was one of the Giants’ major success stories of 2013. Playing just two games over the opening 12 rounds of the season, he sparked into form from that point on in the GWS backline and was regularly named among the club’s best players in the closing weeks of the year. With a new contract in tow, look for more from the talented Haynes this season.

Just two years after temporarily quitting the sport, Haynes was a top 10 NAB AFL Draft pick. But he took a little while to adjust to senior football with the GIANTS. Haynes didn't make his debut until round 10 and was then used in a variety of positions by coach Kevin Sheedy. Rotated forward and back, the lightly built Haynes showed vast improvement in the closing weeks of the season.

In just a couple of years, Haynes has made a meteoric rise from park footballer to No.7 NAB AFL Draft pick. Quit the game before returning in 2010 and his improvement since then has been remarkable. Exceptional overhead, the 192cm Haynes has the height and skills to hold down a wing or half-forward spot. Just needs to add some more bulk to his slight 78kg frame.
