Tomas Bugg was a pre-listed selection for the GIANTS in 2010, completing his schooling in Melbourne before relocating to western Sydney in late 2011. The former Caulfield Grammar student made his debut in Round 1, 2012 with the midfielder earning a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination later that season.
Playing 17 games last season, Bugg is one appearance away from 50 in GWS colours. He spent a six-game stretch in the NEAFL in the middle part of the year, but otherwise performed well in his typical negating role. Showing an ability to get forward at times and win his own ball through the middle, he capped a solid season with a career-best 33 touches in the round 21 victory over Melbourne, and a 10th-place finish in the best and fairest count.
Dropped midway through last season, Bugg returned in round 16 and played out the year strongly. Used more through the midfield after starting his career in defence, the 20-year-old can win his own ball and lay plenty of tackles, and has shown an ability to get forward. A victory in the club’s first 3km time trial of the pre-season indicated he is determined to take another step forward this year.
The second of eight GIANTS to earn a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in 2012, Bugg had an extremely impressive debut campaign. Playing predominantly in defence, the teenager showed poise and good decision-making across his 18 games while topping 20 possessions five times. A former Caulfield Grammar captain, Bugg also showed excellent leadership qualities.
An inside midfielder who is hard at the ball, Bugg captained Caulfield Grammar in 2011. Also played in the NEAFL with GWS in the same year. A competitor with a good aerobic base, Bugg was a member of the 2010 AIS AFL Academy squad.
