Player Bio

Oakleigh Chargers midfielder Toby Greene made an immediate impact after arriving at the GIANTS as pick 11 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, collecting more disposals than any 18-year-old in the history of the game in the club’s inaugural season. He was rewarded with a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in his debut year. At the club’s first Best and Fairest in 2012, Victorian Greene was the runner up in the Kevin Sheedy Medal and took home the Member’s Choice Award and the Rising Star Award.

Played every game in 2015, racking up more than 500 disposals, while also kicking 15 goals as a forward/midfielder. The tough Victorian settled more forward than previous seasons thanks to the wealth of midfielders on the GIANTS list and was highly effective. Impressed with his hard work on and off the field and was one of the GIANTS' most consistent players, claiming a top-10 finish in the best and fairest.

Brilliant in his rookie year before finding life tougher in year No. 2, plenty of eyes were on Greene heading into 2014. It started well, featuring in seven of the first eight games and winning plenty of the ball. An off-field incident in the middle of the season led to a club-imposed suspension, but his response was outstanding, playing the last eight matches in blistering fashion. Despite making only 15 appearances, still finished sixth in the best and fairest and indicated his career is right back on track.

Lauded for a stunning rookie season in 2012 when he averaged better than 28 possessions a game and was runner-up in the GIANTS’ best and fairest, Greene found the going tougher in his second year. Used in unfamiliar run-with roles, he found himself in the NEAFL midway through the year, but bounced back well and will be keen to re-establish himself in 2014.

Rated highly for his work rate, endurance and disposal skills, Greene still wasn't being discussed among the absolute elite youngsters entering 2012. That mistake won't be made again. Playing 20 games as an 18-year-old, Greene maintained an exceptionally high level throughout the year. He finished eighth in the AFL with 28.4 touches per game and only a suspension in round eight cost him a possible NAB Rising Star award.

With a high work rate and terrific endurance base, Greene excelled in the midfield with the Oakleigh Chargers and Vic Metro. A hard nut, he will provide grunt to the GWS on-ball unit. Can break tackles and make room for himself, while he also has good vision and disposal skills.
