After being selected by the GIANTS with pick 10 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, Liam Sumner made his AFL debut against Carlton in Round 6, 2012. Sumner is a quick and agile midfielder who uses the ball well, breaks the lines and is ferocious at the contest. Though he stands at only 178cm, Sumner is very good overhead and loves a goal.
The 2014 season was one of missed opportunities for the versatile Sumner. Good form in the NEAFL was often followed by a quiet week or two, affecting his chance of earning a place in the senior team. He played two AFL games for the year, taking his career tally to 10, mostly up forward and in the midfield.
Sumner featured in eight senior games in 2013, including the first four and the final three, kicking six goals. The talented young midfielder spent the middle parts of the year in the NEAFL working on his game. Penned a contract extension tying him to the club until the end of 2016.
Sumner spent the early weeks of the season in the NEAFL before earning his AFL debut in round six. Fifteen touches and a goal led to another game the following week, but a stress fracture in his foot would then end his season ahead of round eight. It was a disappointing way for his debut campaign to end, but the young midfielder has undoubted talent and will be hoping for an injury-free run this year.
A late call-up to the AIS-AFL Academy for its European tour in April, 2011, Sumner continues to make great strides and was pleasantly surprised to be drafted 10th overall by the GIANTS. Equally adept in the midfield or up forward, Sumner also brings plenty of defensive pressure and is a strong mark for his size. Another who needs to add some muscle to his 71kg frame to make the adjustment to AFL level.
