PLayer Bio

Jonathon Patton is a big forward from Rowville in Victoria. With a massive on-field presence, speed and an ability to take outstanding contested marks, Patton’s playing style has been likened to Brisbane great, Jonathan Brown. He was drafted to the GIANTS with pick one in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.

With two injury-interrupted seasons behind him, Patton started to show what he is capable of in 2014. Playing 19 games, he kicked 25.17 and averaged better than 11 possessions and five marks a game. Then in a cruel blow, he ruptured his ACL for a second time, forcing him into another long stint out of the game. Patton is a driven individual and, armed with a contract extension, he will do everything in his power to get back on the field as soon as possible.

For the second successive season, a knee injury ruined the hopes of the No. 1 pick, this time requiring a reconstruction after rupturing his ACL against St Kilda in round three. It was a cruel blow to the incredibly talented key forward, who has progressed well with his rehab and deserves a good run in 2014.

Injuries didn't allow the 2011 No.1 NAB AFL Draft pick to really demonstrate what he could do in his first season. He was clearly short on fitness, but Patton still managed seven games and four goals following pre-season knee surgery, before a shoulder injury ended his year after round 19. But the key forward showed enough to indicate he could be a dominant force if he can get himself healthy and fully fit.

It is common knowledge that key forwards are hard to find. In Patton, the GIANTS have nabbed one with an enormous future. At 197cm and 101kg, the teenager already boasts an imposing frame and is ready to take the step up to senior level. A strong mark and excellent kick, Patton also has great hands and can gather his own football. He may be a little starved of possession in his early days as the Giants develop, but he relishes the responsibility that comes with being a top draft pick.
