Standout performances by Lachie Keeffe, Matt Flynn and Isaac Cumming weren’t enough to help the GIANTS Reserves get past the Suns in the NEAFL game in Mackay on Saturday night.

The GIANTS trailed at every break and despite the visitors storming home, they couldn’t get past the Suns, who ran out winners 14.9 (93) to 11.6 (72).

The night was soured by a knee injury to forward Lachie Tiziani, who’s set to undergo surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on Tuesday.

Despite suffering their first loss of the season, GIANTS NEAFL coach Adam Schneider lauded the efforts of his charges to fight back and make a contest of it against the Suns.

“As a coach I couldn’t have been prouder of the guys for their effort, it was fantastic,” he said.

“To be a bit short on the bench and to still win the last quarter was just a true show of their character and the spirit they play with.

“There was a bit going on during the game and it could’ve easily been a whitewash, but the boys kept fighting and never gave up.”

Suns 4.1, 9.4,12.7, 14.9 (93)

GIANTS 1.3, 6.3, 8.3, 11.6 (72)

The NEAFL GIANTS Reserves have a bye this weekend, before hosting the Brisbane Lions Reserves at Spotless Stadium on April 28 from 1.10pm.

GIANTS NEAFL coach Adam Schneider on the performance of the GIANTS’ AFL-listed players:

Isaac Cumming – 30 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles, 6 rebound 50s, 3 inside 50s

“‘Cheese' was our best player by far, breaking lines, carrying the ball and his skill execution was superb. It was the best game for Cheese by a long way and really gave us some drive. The type of game he played would stand up at an AFL level.”

Sam Taylor – 22 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

“Sam Taylor had a very solid game down back. He took some good intercept marks and spoilt, and the never-give-up attitude with Sam was fantastic.”

Zach Sproule – 22 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 marks, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s

“‘Sprouley’ was very good. We put him in the middle to help out ‘Flynny’ in the ruck a little bit, and then we threw him on-ball too. He never gave us and just worked hard all day despite playing out of the position he normally plays.”

Lachie Keeffe – 19 disposals, 5 tackles, 4 marks, 1 goal, 2 clearances

“Lachie Keeffe was fantastic. He ran over 15 kilometres on the night, he was just absolutely fantastic with his effort. He’s the perfect example of unbelievable leadership for our younger guys out there and just truly never gave up.”

Tim Mohr – 17 disposals, 6 marks, 4 rebound 50s, 1 tackle, 1 inside 50

Mr Reliable, ‘Mohry’ is, down the back. He just never gets beaten – he gave away one free kick for a goal, but other than that I don’t think he lost a contest all night.”

Jake Stein – 16 disposals, 9 marks, 3 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 tackle

“‘Steiny’ was really good again, he continues to take intercept marks and help out the team with his huge work rate.”

Jack Buckley – 15 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 2 marks

“Solid night for Jack, he competed extremely hard all night, crashed some packs and did the hard stuff for us. It wasn’t the best night when it was slippery and wet and humid for a player like him, but I thought he gave everything he had.”

Matt Flynn – 13 disposals, 51 hit outs, 4 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 2 goals

“Flynny was slow to start in the first quarter, but he was probably the main instigator who turned the game for us in the second quarter. He competed hard all day and had 51 hit outs and just crashed and bashed for us all day.”

Aiden Bonar – 13 disposals, 8 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 3 tackles

“Bonar had a tough night – being in really good form, the opposition put a bit of time into him, but he continued to fight through it, work hard and again gave us a lot of run.”

Lachie Tiziani – 11 disposals, 3 goals, 4 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 3 marks

“He kicked 3.1 and looked extremely dangerous (before his injury). He’s lightning fast and kicked some great goals on the left outside 50, right-foot snaps, so he was in great form. We wish him all the best for his recovery.”

Harry Perryman – 11 disposals, 3 tackles, 3 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 2 marks

“He was inside and gave us some really good use around the middle in a solid performance.”

Dylan Buckley – 6 disposals, 2 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 2 goals, 2 marks

“Dylan was very lively, he gave us some pace and great energy around the forward line and jumped in the midfield as well. He also had 2.1 on the scoreboard halfway through the second quarter. It was a good start by him.”
