Brad Miller to Coach GIANTS in AFLX

Miller to coach AFLX Brad Miller has been named as the GIANTS AFLX coach. He chats about the new format and drops a few hints about which players are involved.

Assistant coach Brad Miller will take the reins as coach of the GIANTS in Saturday’s AFLX games at Allianz Stadium.

Head Coach Leon Cameron will be one of three coaches on the sidelines but it’ll be Miller making the final calls in the new format.

Miller is entering his third season at the GIANTS after two seasons as NEAFL coach and in 2018 is overseeing the forward line.

The former Richmond and Melbourne forward is expecting an exciting spectacle this weekend.

“It’s fast, there’s a lot of space and it’s really hard to defend,” Miller said of the new format.

“What we found is that the guys are going up and back after starting in their positions, and then it becomes 7 v 7 and it can go anywhere.

“It’s a really free-flowing skillful game and there’ll be a lot of scoring.”

The new format will be played in Adelaide on Thursday night and Melbourne on Friday night before wrapping up in Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Six teams will play in each city, with the GIANTS in the same pool as Richmond, Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Each team has two scheduled games (made up of two 10 minute halves) before a Grand Final between the two best performing sides.

While the game has yet to be played at this level, Miller says that the rules are quite similar to a number of the training drills the GIANTS have conducted throughout the summer.

“We’ve had a good crack at it at training and been able to rehearse it but I don’t think we really know what to expect until we’re out there," he said.

“It’s probably good that we’re the third day of games so we get a good chance to watch the Thursday and Friday series, and probably learn a thing or two from that and take that into our series on Saturday.”

Midfielders Tom Scully and Lachie Whitfield were the first players confirmed to be lining up for the GIANTS, while Miller revealed that Adam Tomlinson, Jeremy Finlayson and former Magpie Lachlan Keeffe will also be taking part.

“We tried to pick a team that has really good aerobic capacity but also you have to be covered in case teams go tall," he said.

"We had to be able to have guys that were versatile and could play tall if the opposition decided to do that and tried to mark the footy.

“We’ve tried to have a team full of runners and a team full of guys that can cover a variety of positions.”

The GIANTS squad for the historic format will be revealed at gwsgiants.com.au and through the club’s social media channels at 4pm on Wednesday, February 14.
