In the lead up to the 2017 NAB AFL Draft being held in Sydney, we’re taking a look back at some of the GIANTS Then and Now ahead of the next batch walking into the club.

Heath Shaw

Pick 48 (Father and Son) 2003 NAB AFL Draft (Collingwood)

Before the draft

“Having come through Diamond Creek and the Northern Under-18s, Shaw is set to train with the senior side during the 2003 finals series.” – Collingwood website.

“Heath Shaw, younger brother of Rhyce, is on the verge of state under-18 selection. He is a midfielder and at 181 centimeters is a fine mark for his size.” – The Age

His first day at the club

“There was a bit of apprehension externally about him joining the GIANTS but right from the first day Heath came to me and said he wanted to be involved with the young boys.”

“He got involved with our first year program early on and was always having the young guys over for dinner. He’s a true clubman and he’s got a lot of respect for this club.” – Brett Hand, GIANTS Head of Development and Welfare.

The 14 years since

262 games, 2010 Premiership player, two time all Australian and 2015 Kevin Sheedy Medallist. Heath Shaw has had nothing short of an illustrious playing career.

While he made a name for himself at Collingwood, the hard working defender reached new heights during his time at the GIANTS winning All Australian honours twice and being crowned the GIANTS club champion.

Shaw overcame off field incidents early in his career and established himself as a role model both on and off the field, eventually becoming the GIANTS’ vice-captain from 2014-2016.
