Midfielder Tendai Mzungu has been upgraded to the GIANTS primary list after ruckman Tom Downie was placed on the long-term injury list.

The 31-year-old, who played 102 games for Fremantle before joining the GIANTS with pick 15 of the 2016 AFL Rookie Draft, has been rewarded for a standout pre-season.

After finishing in the top 10 of the GIANTS 2km time trial, Mzungu was amongst the GIANTS best players in their JLT Community Series win over West Coast, collecting 22 disposals and kicking a goal.

The mature recruit was then a standout for the GIANTS in their NEAFL practice match against the Swans last Friday showing great poise under pressure.

“It was a nice phone call to receive; to be officially on the list and available for selection,” Mzungu said.

“Obviously the circumstances around it aren’t ideal but personally I’m excited.

“I just wanted to come in an earn the respect (of the playing group) and to be acknowledged with a promotion is obviously a sign that I’ve gone some way to doing that.”

As nominated rookies, forwards Daniel Lloyd and Sam Reid are also available for selection in the GIANTS senior side.

The GIANTS open the 2017 Premiership season against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Sunday, March 26.
