When it comes to game day, the change rooms under Spotless Stadium are a hive of activity, noise and 22 footballers preparing for battle.

But a few days before the game, there’s that same feeling of anticipation and excitement as some of the club’s most passionate and dedicated fans begin the process of making the banner in that same room.

The run-through banner is an AFL institution, a tradition that dates back to the 1960s.

And it’s a rigorous process.

Making a banner usually takes five to six hours and a team of more than 25 volunteers who give up their time both during the week and on game day.

“It sometimes feels like we’re chefs, it takes hours to prepare a meal and everyone gobbles it down in a minute,” Cheer Squad member Mark Costello said.

“It feels like that, it’ll take five hours tonight; we’ve been here since six and it’ll be 11 by the time we get out of here and the players will run through it in 30 seconds.

“But I’m sure they all do appreciate the effort.”
