Small forward Liam Sumner will miss the rest of the 2015 season after having surgery on his troublesome right foot today.

Sumner was sidelined for more than four months earlier this year after being diagnosed with a navicular stress fracture.

He returned in June and played five games for the UWS GIANTS in the NEAFL before experiencing further foot soreness.

The 21-year-old, who was selected with pick 10 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, is expected to return prior to the start of the 2016 season.

In better news for the club, several players have recovered well from the GIANTS’ clash with Fremantle at Domain Stadium on Sunday.

Key forward Jeremy Cameron was struck on the nose by defender Zac Dawson in the first term and came from the ground bleeding heavily.

He struggled to stem the bleeding for the remainder of the match but has been cleared to line up against Essendon at Spotless Stadium on Sunday.

Meanwhile vice captain Heath Shaw (abductor) and ruckman Tom Downie (illness) have also pulled up well and will be available for selection.

Defender Matt Buntine was subbed out of the match after suffering another head knock – his second in three weeks – and will undergo a fitness test ahead of team selection.

Small forward Devon Smith will also have his knee tested at training after missing the game on Sunday while defender Nick Haynes will also face a fitness test on his groin.

Rhys Palmer is available for selection after overcoming a corked hamstring.

Rookie listed player Sam Schulz will also return through the NEAFL after missing the past two weeks with a shoulder strain while Zac Williams will miss a further week with hamstring soreness.

Dylan Shiel (knee), Shane Mumford (ankle), Tim Mohr (knee) and Pat McKenna (hip) remain in the rehab group.

The GIANTS play Essendon at Spotless Stadium on Sunday at 3.20pm.
