Big-man Tom Downie has put up his hand to help reinforce the GIANTS' ruck division after starring in the UWS GIANTS’ 65-point win over Ainslie in Canberra.

It was a tight contest early but the UWS GIANTS bolted away from their opponents in the second half, cruising to a 19.21 (135) to 11.4 (70) victory at Alan Ray Oval.

Downie relished being the number one ruckman, dominating hit-outs around the ground and pushing forward to kick two goals.

The 22-year-old was forced to shoulder most of the tap-work with Andrew Phillips out injured and Rory Lobb playing seniors.

The trio are all vying to be the GIANTS’ starting ruckman with Shane Mumford set to miss the rest of the season after having ankle surgery last week.

UWS GIANTS coach Brett Hand said Downie had done his chances of a promotion no harm after such a strong performance.

“Downie was exceptional with his physical attack on the ball and his tackling pressure,” Hand said.

“It was probably one of the best games I’ve seen him play and to push forward and kick two goals was also pleasing.

“We started the match a bit slowly but we cleaned up our disposal and really lifted our intensity when we needed to."

Livewire Jed Lamb also pushed his claim for a senior recall, slotting a game-high four goals after copping a heavy tag for most of the match.

Other good performers included PM CAPTIAL GIANTS Academy graduate Jeremy Finlayson, Liam Sumner, Curtly Hampton and Paul Ahern.

“We were missing some of our stronger performers this week so it was great to see others step up in their absence,” Hand said.

“It’s good that we can play eight top-ups and still perform at such a high level."

The UWS GIANTS have a bye this week ahead of their clash with Swans Reserves at Blacktown International Sportspark on July 4.
