To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, the GIANTS have planned a number of activities, as the club gets the chance to play on ANZAC Day for the first time.

The GIANTS will take on the Gold Coast Suns at StarTrack Oval, Canberra on ANZAC Day, the first time the club has played on this day and the first time the nation’s capital has hosted an ANZAC Day AFL match.

There will be a precision drill team pre-game with soldiers from Australian Defence Force Academy.

The traditional ANZAC Day observance ceremony before the first bounce will feature a catafalque party - four members of an armed guard who stand, their heads bowed and their arms (weapon) reversed, facing outward as a symbolic form of respect for those who have fallen.

The national anthems of both Australia and New Zealand will be heard before the Last Post is played.

The traditional ANZAC Ode - from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon - will be read by ACT RSL President Peter Eveille.

Members of the ACT RSL will also be selling ANZAC badges inside the main gate as patrons enter.

Look out for GIANTS and Suns players reciting the ANZAC Ode together on the big screen at the game.

There will also be Canberra’s biggest game of two-up in the stadium at half-time, led by the ground announcer, with over 30 prizes up for grabs.

The GIANTS will also be showing #ANZACDay tweets on the big screen in conjunction with The Australian War Memorial.

Fans are encouraged to Tweet about their Anzac Day experience along with the designated hashtag (#ANZACDay).

Four GIANTS have played on this special day before. Vice-captain Heath Shaw featured in six ANZAC Day matches, playing for Collingwood in the traditional blockbuster between the Pies and Essendon. He was awarded the ANZAC Medal as best on ground in the 2007 match.

Ruckman Shane Mumford made his AFL debut for Geelong in an ANZAC Day match against Fremantle in 2008 and also played in the first-ever ANZAC Day match in New Zealand when the Swans took on St Kilda in 2013.

New recruit Joel Patfull played for Brisbane against St Kilda in New Zealand on ANZAC Day last year while Rhys Palmer, who plays his 100th AFL game this weekend, played three ANZAC Day games with Fremantle before joining the GIANTS.

The GIANTS play the Gold Coast Suns at StarTrack Oval, Canberra on Saturday April 25 at 5.40pm. Tickets are available through Ticketek.
